Disease Surveillance & Reporting

NVHD shares responsibility with the Connecticut DPH in the surveillance, investigation, and control of disease outbreaks. Finding the source and preventing the spread of gastro enteric illnesses known to be caused by contaminated food, water, and person-to-person contact with infected persons or animals is the role of the local health department.

Tuberculosis (TB) Program

NVHD works collaboratively with the CT TB Control Program whose mission it is to interrupt and prevent the transmission of tuberculosis (TB), prevent emergence of drug resistant TB and reduce death, disability, illness, and much more caused by tuberculosis. NVHD works alongside DPH and physicians to conduct surveillance for TB disease and latent TB infection.  The Public Health Nurse conducts case interviews, education, screening, treatment and containment activities when we have a positive case, including Directly Observed Therapy (DOT), which consists of home visits for residents with infectious tuberculosis and screenings for the potentially exposed.
