While sometimes the words vaccination and immunization are used interchangeably, it is important to understand that vaccination refers to the act of administering/receiving a vaccine through injection or taking an oral vaccine dose, while immunization refers to the process of being made immune (resistant) to an infectious disease. Immunity can be induced by vaccine but also includes natural immunity acquired from past infections.
The NVHD offers low-cost immunizations for children and adults. Immunizations available include: MMR, Varicella, Meningococcal, Tdap, Polio, Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Td, HPV, and Influenza

Vaccine Programs at NVHD
NVHD participates in the Connecticut Vaccine Program (CVP), CT’s expanded pediatric vaccination program. The CVP is state and federally funded through the Vaccines for Children Program (VFC), a federal program that provides all ACIP recommended vaccines at no cost to children who might not otherwise be vaccinated because of the inability to pay.
Not all children are eligible for the VFC program.
The CT Immunization Action Plan (IAP) is a statewide program funded by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) whose purpose is to raise immunization rates of infants through pre-school children. There are currently 9 IAP sites in CT, one of which is at NVHD. NVHD has an Immunization Action Plan (IAP) Coordinator who ensures the IAP objectives are met for residents and providers in Ansonia, Beacon Falls, Derby, Naugatuck, Seymour, Shelton, Stratford, Monroe, Trumbull & Oxford through:
- Conducting outreach and tracking using our statewide immunization registry, CT WIZ. CT WIZ is a web-based database that maintains complete, accurate, and secure immunization records of all CT children.
- Educating the public about the importance of vaccination.
- Conducting assessment in pediatric practices to improve vaccine delivery.

Yes! Vaccines are carefully tested and continuously monitored.
Some vaccines are required by the state for kids to attend school and daycare. Others are recommended because they offer the best protection against illnesses like measles and whooping cough.
Our Public Health Clinic at 98 Bank Street in Seymour, provides the following free or low-cost vaccines to kids 18 and younger and adults: MMR (measles, mumps, rubella), Chickenpox (Varicella), Meningitis (Meningococcal), Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, whooping cough), Polio, Hepatitis A and B, HPV (Human Papillomavirus), and Flu shots
Children, 18 and younger, may qualify for free vaccines through the Connecticut Vaccine Program (CVP). The program covers children with Medicaid, no insurance, or limited insurance. Click here for more information about this program.

Sore arm, tiredness, and low-grade fever are the most common side effects and typically go away in a day or two. More serious side effects are rare. If you’re worried, contact us or your child’s doctor.
Yes. It’s safe and recommended to receive multiple vaccines during the same visit. If you have questions, talk to your child’s doctor or call us.
You can get them from your child’s doctor, school, or the Connecticut Immunization Information System (CT WiZ). Click here to access the CT WiZ Public Portal. Your child’s records will be in CT WiZ if your child’s doctor has uploaded them to the portal.

Seasonal Flu Information
NVHD offers flu vaccinations to those 3 years and older throughout the fall and winter months. We offer the quadrivalent vaccine (ages 3 and up) and the high dose vaccine (ages 65 and older). Clinics are held at various locations throughout the community, such as, senior centers, local businesses and at NVHD by appointment. Cost with no insurance:
- $40 – Trivalent Vaccine (ages 3 and up)
- $80 – High Dose Vaccine (ages 65 and older)
- FREE for eligible children through the VFC program
